Snow Days

Mayhem at Heathrow

“I’m dreaming of a white Christmas…”

Yesterday I attended the Rotary Club of Uxbridge’s Christmas lunch. We had a wonderful meal at a picturesque golf course. The mood was festive with Christmas crackers, party poppers and mincemeat tarts. What I found exceptional was the reaction to light flurries on our way to the lunch. To be fair, there was no way of knowing that the snow would abruptly stop after only half an hour. The small amount of snow caused significant delays as traffic glued up.  The snow made me feel more at home and helped me get into the Christmas spirit.

…Then we got a large dump of about 10 cm of snow overnight. Although it is nothing compared to the 75 cm of snow that recently trapped motorists in Ontario, the storm has caused utter mayhem throughout Western Europe. All of London’s airports have been closed- Heathrow is not expected to open until tomorrow morning! Airports and schools have been closed throughout the UK, Germany, Northern Italy, France and the Netherlands.  This will no doubt cause a domino effect and delay further flights throughout the Christmas travel season. On top of all this, there is a severe weather warning in effect for the London area, with up to 25 cm of snow expected overnight!

On a happier note, I am now done classes for this term!
